Softly herbal, lightly minty, and naturally sweet with bright citrus and gentle warmth.
Mullein Hollow is a smooth, caffeine-free herbal tea thoughtfully crafted around botanicals with a long history of traditional respiratory use, alongside herbs that have been studied for their potential role in soothing cough and respiratory discomfort.
At the heart of the blend is Mullein Leaf, an herb with centuries of traditional use for the lungs, throat, and respiratory system. Modern research has identified numerous naturally occurring compounds in mullein and has investigated its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and other biological properties. Human clinical research specifically evaluating mullein for respiratory symptoms, however, remains limited, so we pair it with several botanicals that have a stronger body of human research behind them.
Marshmallow Root and Thyme are two particularly interesting additions. Marshmallow Root has been studied for irritated throat and dry cough, including prospective studies of marshmallow preparations in hundreds of consumers. A review of the available research also found support for marshmallow's traditional use for cough, although the evidence varies depending on the preparation studied.
Thyme brings a warm, aromatic herbal note and has also been evaluated in human clinical trials, particularly as part of combination herbal preparations for cough. A systematic review and meta-analysis of herbal cough medicines found evidence supporting preparations containing Thyme in combination with Ivy or Primrose, while placebo-controlled trials have reported reductions in coughing fits with Thyme-containing preparations. These studies were conducted on standardized extracts and combinations rather than Mullein Hollow itself, but they are part of the reason thyme earned a place in our formula.
We also include Licorice Root, traditionally valued for the throat and respiratory tract. Licorice has been the subject of extensive laboratory and pharmacological research, and limited human clinical research has also examined Licorice-containing preparations for cough. One randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of a Licorice preparation in adults with chronic cough reported improvement in cough severity compared with placebo.
Rather than stopping at the more traditional respiratory herbs, we wanted Mullein Hollow to be something you would actually look forward to drinking. Lemon balm and Peppermint give the blend a fresh, cooling herbal character, while Orange Peel adds a bright citrus note. A small amount of Ginger root provides gentle warmth, and naturally sweet licorice root helps bring everything together.
The result is a cup that tastes smooth, fresh, lightly minty and citrusy, with an earthy herbal base and naturally sweet finish. It feels much more like a comforting cup of tea than a harsh medicinal herbal brew.
We blend Mullein Hollow in small batches as a warm, comforting herbal tea for those days when you want to settle in with a cup of traditional respiratory botanicals.
